The Art and Science of Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning, a transformative exfoliation technique, has emerged as a sought-after method for achieving a flawlessly smooth complexion. Also known as dermablading, this process involves using a surgical blade to delicately remove the outer layer of dead skin cells and fine vellus hair, commonly referred to as peach fuzz.

The goal is not only to unveil a brighter and more radiant complexion but also to enhance the absorption of skincare products and create an ideal canvas for makeup application. Dermablading is celebrated for its immediate and visible results, leaving the skin with a fresh and rejuvenated appearance

Benefits and Considerations

It is essential to prioritize safety by ensuring the use of sharp, sterile blades and maintaining proper technique to prevent nicks or irritation.

Those with active acne or certain skin conditions should approach dermaplaning with caution because it could spread bacteria or cause scaring if the acne was open, consulting with skincare professionals for personalized advice. When approached with care, dermaplaning becomes a transformative journey toward a luminous and revitalized complexion.

Sharpness and Precision

When choosing a dermaplaning blades, sharpness and precision are paramount. A blade that is sharp ensures a smooth and efficient exfoliation process, effectively removing dead skin cells and peach fuzz without causing irritation.

Safety Features for Dermaplane Blades

Safety features should also be a top priority. Look for blades with built-in guards to minimize the risk of nicks or cuts, particularly if you are new to dermaplaning. Ensuring a user-friendly experience is crucial, and safety features play a significant role in achieving that. I know someone who used a surgical blade to dermaplane at home and accidentally dropped it and sliced her finger open…

Dermaplane Blades Material and Durability

Consider the material of the blade and its impact on durability. Stainless steel blades and those crafted from high-quality materials tend to offer longevity, providing value for your investment. The durability of the blade is essential for maintaining its sharpness over time, ensuring consistent and effective dermaplaning sessions.

The Top 10 Best Dermaplaning Blades:

StackedSkincare Dermaplaning Tool

StackedSkincare Dermaplaning Face Exfoliating Tool - Professional-Grade, At-Home, Extra-Sharp Blade to remove Dead Skin and Peach Fuzz - Includes 1 Aluminum Handle and 1 Razor Head (Non-Electric)

Why We Love Them: These single-edge blades are renowned for their precision and gentle touch. Made from Japanese stainless steel, they glide effortlessly over the skin, minimizing the risk of nicks and irritation. This one was the sharpest of the ones I’ve tried and also the easiest to change out the blades.

Here’s my review:

Best For: Sensitive skin, beginners, and those seeking precise control.

Tweezerman Facial Razor: Dermaplaning Blades

Tweezerman Facial Razor

Why We Love Them: Affordable, stainless steel, changeable blades, and sharp! Not ideal for beginners because of its sharpness.

Some reviewers said the blades were hard to change but when I changed the blade it wasn’t hard at all. The only think that was tricky is that the replacement blades click on to a piece of plastic and they easily un-click from the plastic so you just have to press it back together before you slide it in the razor.

I felt this one was a little bit less sharp than the Stacked Skincare face razor but not much. The price is so good on this one that I think the value is outstanding. It worked 98% as well as the Stacked Skincare dermablade but for a fraction of the cost and it comes with 3 replacement blades.

Here’s my video review on the Stacked Skincare face razor:

Best For: Advanced Users.

Versed Instant Gratification At-Home Dermaplaning Blades:

Versed Instant Gratification At-Home Dermaplaning Tool - Reusable, Pro-Grade Facial Exfoliator - Stainless Steel Facial Razor with Single-Edge Blade for Smooth Complexion & Enhanced Makeup Application

Why We Love Them: This reusable stainless steel blade offers a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative. Its slip-free grip and single-edge design ensure precision and control.

I have not yet tried this option but it looks almost the same as the Stacked Skincare option so imagine it’s similar. I’ll update once I try it-gotta let my face hair grow back first though!

Best For: Eco-conscious consumers, experienced dermaplaners seeking a reusable option, and those with normal to oily skin.

Dermaflash Luxe Dermaplaning Tool:

DERMAFLASH LUXE plus Device, Anti Aging, Exfoliation, Hair Removal, and Dermaplaning Tool with Sonic Edge Technology and 4 Weeks of Treatment, Blush

Why We Love Them: This rechargeable electric tool boasts adjustable intensity levels, allowing you to customize your experience. Its built-in LED light helps ensure you don’t miss a spot.

Best For: Those seeking a premium, customizable experience, and those with normal to oily skin.

Michael Todd Beauty Sonoplate Ultrasonic Skin Exfoliator: Dermaplaning Blades

Michael Todd Beauty - Sonicsmooth – SONIC Technology Dermaplaning Tool - 2 in 1 Women’s Facial Exfoliation & Peach Fuzz Hair Removal System with 8 Weeks of Safety Edges

Why We Love Them: This innovative tool combines dermaplaning with ultrasonic vibrations for deeper exfoliation and increased product absorption. It’s a splurge, but worth it for a luxurious, multi-functional experience.

Best For: Those seeking additional exfoliation benefits, and those with normal to oily skin who are comfortable with a higher price point.

Swann-Morton #10R Sterile Surgical Blades, Stainless Steel:

Why We Love Them: These blades are basically scalpels that would be used in the office. The major benefit is that they are very very sharp and are less likely to make accidental cuts in your skin from dull blades but of course, the danger is accidentally cutting yourself more deeply if you use a wrong angle or drop it.

A good plan would be to start with a cheapie beginner tool and then advance to one of these. Having said that, I’m itching to try this to see if the results are any better than with the mid-level options.

Best For: Those seeking the most professional at-home results.

Tips for Safe and Effective At-Home Dermablading

Embarking on your at-home dermablading journey requires not just the right tools but also a thorough understanding of the process to ensure safe and effective results. Consider these essential tips to enhance your dermaplaning experience:

Preparing the Skin:

Before you begin dermaplaning, it’s crucial to prepare your skin adequately. Cleanse your face to remove any makeup, oils, or impurities. Some people like to go over their skin with an alcohol pad first too. Dry your skin thoroughly to ensure a smooth and even dermablading session. Some like to dermaplane on dry skin and some like to first add an oil to the skin. Note that oil will make the skin more slippery and this could be good or bad.

Technique and Angle:

Pay close attention to your dermaplaning technique. Hold the blade at a 45-degree angle for the less expensive razors and for the scalpel options often only a very slight angle can be used. and use short, gentle strokes. Avoid applying excessive pressure to prevent irritation or potential injuries. Maintain a light touch for optimal results.

Aftercare and Skincare:

Post-dermaplaning care is vital for maximizing the benefits of the procedure. Apply a soothing, hydrating serum or moisturizer to nourish the freshly revealed skin.

Don’t use vitamin C or retinol or any acids or exoliants after dermaplaning because- OUCH… also… that’s just not good for your skin.

My personal aftercare routine after I dermaplane is:

Sunscreen is your ally—protect your skin from harmful UV rays to maintain the newfound radiance.

Frequency:

Consider the frequency of your dermablading sessions. While dermaplaning can be done regularly, it’s essential not to overdo it. Allow your skin time to regenerate between sessions, typically every three to four weeks, to avoid potential sensitivity and to let your fur grow back. 🙂

Tool Maintnance:

Regularly clean and sanitize your dermaplaning tool to prevent the buildup of bacteria. I do this by putting alcohol on a cotton round and then wiping the whole tool well. You just have to be careful because you’re cleaning a blade and could easily cut yourself.

Ensure that the blades are sharp and in good condition before each session. Well-maintained tools contribute to a safer and more effective dermablading experience. It’s almost always suggested to use a new blade when you dermaplane so always purchase extra blades.

I personally usually try to get 2-3 uses out of the blade by keeping it clean with alcohol but I really can feel it loose a bit of it’s sharpness each time.

Avoid Active Acne:

If you have active acne or inflamed skin, it’s advisable to steer clear of dermaplaning in those areas. The procedure could exacerbate irritation or spread bacteria. Focus on healthy, intact skin for the best results.

I did find however that dermaplaning helped my daugthers’ acne prone skins when I dermaplaned over the areas of their skin that didn’t have active acne but did have skin build up that was clogging their pores and leading to black heads and eventual acne.

We have found with their teenage skin that the key has been a balance of exfoliating through dermaplaning and light at home chemical peels or masks and hydration through moisturizers and using castor oil at night.

Consult a Professional:

If you’re uncertain about dermaplaning or have specific skin concerns, consult with a skincare professional. They can provide personalized advice, ensuring that dermaplaning aligns with your skin’s unique needs and conditions.

Conclusion: Dermaplane Blades for Home Use

Dermaplaning is one of the easiest, least expensive, and most effective forms of manual exfoliation. The dermaplaning blades you use very much matter.

Sharper is better to get the cleanest results and avoid scratching the skin with a dull blade but on the flip side, if you don’t know what you’re doing and use a sharp blade you could cut yourself very deeply. The best plan is to either invest in a more expensive tool that is sharp but offers safety precautions or to start out with a cheaper tool that might not be as sharp and then progress up to a scalpel sharpness when you have lots of experience.

Out of the different blades I have used I liked the Stacked Skincare blade the best, BUT, I dont’ think it’s worth the price and since the Tweezerman dermaplaning blade is such a close second and so much less expensive, that is going to be my personal recommendation for now. I will update if my opinion changes after trying other options out.
