In recent years, red light therapy has emerged as a promising modality for promoting various health benefits, from skin rejuvenation to pain relief. While professional red light therapy sessions have gained popularity, the convenience and accessibility of at-home devices have made this wellness trend more affordable than ever. Let’s delve into the world of affordable red light therapy at home and explore how you can illuminate your path to wellness without breaking the bank.

What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation (PBM), involves exposure to low levels of red or near-infrared light. This type of therapy is safe but has a good amount of clinical research showing it actually works. Studies show it stimulate cellular activity, reduces inflammation, helps with acne and wrinkles, promotes hair growth, promotes healing, and helps with pain.

Benefits of Red Light Therapy:

Skin Health:

Red light therapy helps with collagen production, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, evens out skin tone, and helps with acne and acne scarring. I use a red light therapy mask and am loving the results.

Pain Relief:

Red light therapy is great for pain relief and helping wounds heal. It is effective enough that NASA funds the research and development of red light therapy to help its astronauts heal more quickly in space. It’s also used by the military for more rapid healing of wounds.

Mood & Sleep:

Red light therapy has been shown to help decrease negative emotions and in so doing even mood and promote more restful sleep.

What to Consider Before Purchasing Affordable Red Light Therapy at Home

  • It’s hard to confirm if a company’s claims are true and if they are consistent. You do not want to purchase a red light therapy device, even if it’s super affordable and have it not be effective because the wavelengths are wrong or the power is too high or too low.
  • Is the device FDA cleared? There is no such thing as an FDA approved red light therapy device because red light therapy is only a class 2 device. Also, FDA registered means nothing so don’t be impressed by that claim. FDA cleared is what to look for.
  • Is the wavelength right? You’ll want to look for wavelengths around 630 and again around 850. The range in the 700s doesn’t show much effect.
  • Is the power/irradiance optimal? Irradiance is measured in mW/cm2 or milliwatts per square centimeter. Optimal irradiance levels for red light therapy are around 20-100 mW/cm2.
  • How easy is the device to use? Is it the right size and shape for what you want to treat?
  • Does the company seem legit? Use common knowledge when it comes to purchasing. I am personally very very wary about purchasing medical devices or supplements on Amazon because there are so many scammers out there.

Affordable Options for Red Light Therapy at Home

Of course, these are not the least expensive red light therapy options out there but I will not recommend anything that doesn’t have proper specs to be effective or has bad reviews. The products suggested below are products that are not necessarily FDA cleared and might not list the power used but the wavelengths are good and the reviews are also good. If you would like to compare this list with the best red light devices (regardless of price) you can go here.

Best Affordable Handheld Wands:

Compact and affordable, handheld wands are suitable for targeted treatments on specific areas of the body.

Best Affordable Panel Lights:

Entry-level panel lights provide a larger treatment area, making them versatile for full-body or targeted sessions.

Best Affordable Red Light Therapy Masks:

Conclusion

The positive effects of red light therapy are amazing but the price can be steep. The worst thing of all is to spend any money at all on a device that completely doesn’t work or has too much radiation and gets too hot, which studies have shown to cause the aging of skin.

I feel very good about the recommendations I have made here. If I find any more affordable red light therapy devices in the future I will update this post.

If you are wondering, I have two red light therapy devices:

  1. The Currentbody Led Light Therapy Mask. It is on the pricier side but the specs are perfect and the fact that it’s made of flexible silicon means I can also use it on any other place on my body that I want to improve my skin, namely my chest and neck. If you do check this one out, use “AshLED” for their best current discount.
  2. I have two of the Therasage Thera Tri-lite panels because they are part of the Therasage portable sauna. This is an insane deal in my opinion because not only do I have an amazing sauna that uses far infared wavelengths to heat the sauna but TWO of their near infared and red light panels so I can use the sauna tent either as a sauna or just as a red light therapy chamber. I feel like this right here is a total jackpot. Yes, the sauna is expensive but when you break down what you are getting, it’s a steal. Also, Therasage is an awesome company and has top-notch devices that have undergone FDA work.
