When brewing tea there are 4 main components you want to make sure are made of non toxic materials: the kettle that heats the water, the teapot that brews the tea, the tea infuser that holds the tea leaves or blooms, and the cups that you pour the tea into and drink out of. With each of these components, the main materials you want to avoid are plastic (namely BPA and phthalates) and chemicals that are found in finishes and sealants. Stainless Steel: Best Non Toxic Tea Infuser

Stainless steel is by far my favorite material for use in a non toxic tea infuser because of its durability and non toxic nature. When using stainless steel for food applications, you want to choose 304 or 316 stainless steel. Stainless steel can usually be washed in the dishwasher and is easy to care for. The only thing you’d want to watch for is making sure it doesn’t rust, which could happen if it was scratched or damaged and then left wet. The obvious way to avoid this is to keep it dry when not used. If your stainless steel infuser becomes rusty, then it’s time to replace it.

Borosilicate glass is my second favorite option for a non toxic tea infuser and that is because of its extreme stability and non toxic nature and that it doesn’t affect the taste at all. The only drawback to borosilicate glass (just the type of glass used for these applications) is that if you dropped it, it would be more likely to shatter than the other materials.

It’s ideal to use re-useable tea infusers for environmental reasons and also because there’s always the chance that a manufacturer isn’t being 100% transparent about the quality of their paper tea bag but if you need an on the go option or this fits your lifestyle then it’s not the worst option.

Silicon is a bit similar to bamboo in the fact that it is generally accepted as non-toxic but there’s just not quite as much current research about silicon in food applications as the other materials. Silicon is a combo of a type of rubber and a type of plastic. There was a study showing silicon gel made rats sick, and while a silicon tea infuser is nothing like eating silicon gel constantly, it does concern me slightly more. I would use silicon for certain cooking applications, for instance maybe for baking or dehydrating molds where I needed something non stick but with stainless steel and borosilicate glass options out there I just don’t see it as necessary. If you do choose silicon then make sure it is 100% food-safe.
